The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has denied  media reports claiming that the Niger Delta militants blew up one of the oil pipelines in a move aimed to defy the peace moves embarked by the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, to the region.
The Director of Defence Information (DDI), Brig-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, in a statement on Tuesday said the report with the caption: “Militants Blow up Pipeline After Osinbajo Visit”, in Ughelli, Delta State, apparently in defiance of the efforts of the Federal Government at addressing issues in that region, is a ruse.
“The said report to say the least is not only a ruse but a complete imagination of its author as the said incident was a bush burning which was immediately put under control.  This prompt action prevented environmental catastrophe that the incident might have caused,” Abubakar said.
He appealed to “media practitioners who are also stakeholders in nation building to properly verify issues of defence and security matter especially as it affects the economic security of our nation before going to press to avoid causing unnecessary apprehension among the populace”.
Accordin to him, there is the need for all people of goodwill to work in synergy with security agencies towards the betterment of the region in particular and the country in general.
