The Nigerian military on Wednesday  said its troops have rescued the staff of Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), kidnapped in the latest deadly ambush by the Boko Haram terrorists in the North East.

But the whereabouts of the staff of the University of Maiduguri and bodies of the number of Civilian JTF (Vigilantes) allegedly kidnapped or killed in the incident.

The terrorists had on  Tuesday , at about 3.00pm,  ambushed the escort and team of NNPC staff returning from oil exploration at Barno Yasu, Magumeri Local Government Area of Borno State.
On receipt of the information, the Director of Army Public Relations (DAPR), Brig-Gen. Sani Usman, said the Brigade mobilized and sent reinforcement, search and rescue party that include the Armed Forces Special Forces and guides that worked and pursued the terrorists  throughout the night.

“So far, they have rescued all the NNPC staff and recovered  the corpses of the Officer, eight soldiers and a civilian have who have been  evacuated to 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital,” Usman stated. He said the team recovered four vehicles one of which include a gun truck mounted with an Anti-Aircraft Gun, two white Hilux taken away from NNPC staff and 1 blue Hilux belonging to CJTF.

The team also recovered large quantities of arms and ammunition, several spare tyres, many jerry cans of containing Petroleum, Oil and Lubricant, assorted drugs, Improvised Explosive Device (IED) making materials, reflective jackets and a Motorola handheld radio, among others.

“The team also neutralized many of the terrorists. The troops are not relenting in the pursuit, search and rescue effort,” he stated.
However, source privy to the unfortunate incident informed Global Sentinel that the military did not make any mention of the University staff and the Civilian JTF reported  to be affected in the ambush.
According to the source, “a team of officials from NNPC with six staff of Geology Dept, one from Soil Science department, in 10 vehicles, under Military Escort, came under JAS (Boko Haram) attack in Northern Borno while on an exploratory mission yesterday. My source at UMTH  Morgue confirmed bodies of eight Soldiers and unspecified CJTF brought Late last night.
“Residents of the area have attested that the faction operating in that axis do  not kill cilivians, hence they may have taken away the seven UNIMAID staff and the vehicle.”
“This has been the ordeals we are going through. No mention is made  of even the the eight Soldiers bodies that were brought  to the morgue at UMTH. They would tell their families that they are in the frontline, until declared missing in action. It is terribly unfortunate.”
The source insisted that “10 academic and technical staff of Unimaid Geology department were among those who were abducted. Security operatives and CJTF numbering up to 30 also fell into the Boko HHaram  trap. Very unfortunate”.
