The Federal Government and Defence Headquarters (DHQ) have denied reports that the duo of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Abayomi Olonisakin and Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Ibok-Ete Ibas, has been retired and replaced.
The two service chiefs were allegedly directed to hand over their offices on or before Friday, December 16, 2016.
But the Minister of Defence Mansur Muhammad Dan-Ali, in a statement on Monday by his Public Relations Officer, Col. Tukur Gusau, said their was no iota of truth in the report as he lacks the capacity to effect such changes.
“Please be informed that there was no such communication between the office of the Honourable Minister of Defence and the service chiefs directing any one of them to hand over his office and proceed on retirement.
“The appointment and replacement of service chiefs is a prerogative responsibility of the office of the President and Commander in Chief,” Dan-Ali stated.
In the same vein, the DHQ has raised an alarm over a false story going round on the social media claiming that some service chiefs have been retired and replaced.
Speaking to PRNigeria on the rumours, the Director Defence Information (DDI), Brig-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, described the rumours as baseless and unfounded. He added that the service chiefs are still discharging their official responsibilities.
“It is disturbing and embarrassing the cooked up stories going round in the social media.
“There is no iota of truth in the misleading information. We ask the public to ignore the report as baseless and unfounded,” Abubakar said.
