The Nigerian Senate and Department of State Services ( DSS) has combined forces to kill any hope of Ibrahim Magu becoming the substantive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC)
The upper legislative chamber in an unanimous decision on Wednesday refused to confirm the acting EFCC chairman, based on the content of letter from the DSS.
Magu’s rejection came after the Senators grilled him for about one and half hour at the floor of the Senate. Although he responded to several questions from the Senators but when the Senate President put his confirmation into voting, it was unanimously rejected with majority of the Senators shouting loud “nay”.
Earlier, when answering questions from the Senators on the DSS that indicted him, Magu alleged that there were two version of the DSS report before Senate. He cast doubt on the credibility of DSS and wondered why they will send two different reports on him to the Senate.
Before putting his confirmation into voting, the Senate President Bukola Saraki called on the clerk to the Senate Mr. Nelson Ayewo to clarify if actually the DSS send two different reports to the Senate.
In his clarification, the clerk said only one report was received from DSS in his office. He added that the second letter from DSS to his office on Tuesday 14th March 2017 was to re-affirm the first report.
