The Amnesty International (AI) has condemned the arrested Amnesty Turkey’s Director İdil Eser, seven other human rights defenders and two trainers who were attending a workshop in Istanbul.

The AI’s Deputy Europe Director – Campaigns, Mr. Fotis Filippou, on Friday said for over 24 hours, the activists  weren’t allowed to contact their families or see a lawyer – and no one knew where they were.

According to Filippou, “Idil and the others were doing nothing wrong. Some are now being questioned on suspicion of ‘membership of an armed terrorist organisation’, a ridiculous and baseless accusation”.

He noted that these arrests is coming less than a month since Amnesty’s Chair in Turkey was also detained by the Turkish authorities, along with 22 other lawyers.

He said that Turkish President Erdogan’s government is abusing its power, deliberately making the country a dangerous place for people who speak out for human rights.
