A coalition of militantgroups fighting in the delta of the Niger River against Nigerian authorities called for partition of the country into five new republics, local media reported Sunday.
The militants propose to create such republics as Arewa Islamic Republic, Biafra Republic, Middle Belt Republic, Oduduwa Republic and Republic of Niger Delta in order to avoid violence, Nigeria’s Daily Post news outlet reported.
The media outlet added that all the republics should be addressed as United Republics of Nigeria.
Nigeria has one of the biggest oil reserves in the world. At the same time, the oil production of the African nation has been heavily affected by illegal output and activities of militants in the oil-rich Niger Delta area, who attack oil facilities in the region, forcing oil producers to shut down production, causing outages and decrease in the country’s total oil output.
