The Zamfara State Governor and Chairman Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Hon. Abdul’aziz Yari has called on the United States (US) to help Nigeria to tackle the emerging security threats, especially to end the sustained killings in his state.
Yari made the call on Tuesday while hosting the Acting Ambassador of the United States of America Mr David J. Young on a courtesy call at the state Government House, Gusau.
He appealed to the US to support Nigerian Security agencies with modern equipment and training to contain its security challenges.
The Governor in a statement on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to Zamfara State Governor(Public Enlightenment, media and communication), Hon. Ibrahim Dosara , told the US Ambassador of the peculiar security challenges that have been bedevilling Zamfara state for over eight years which include banditry, kidnapping, cattle rustling and other forms of criminality.
He said the Zamfara insecurity had nothing to do with ethnicity and religion but purely criminally minded acts that the State and beyond suffered seriously.
Governor Yari explained the immense commitments put in place by his administration in providing adequate logistics, information and guidance to the security agencies aimed at containing the menace which according to him, the heads of security in the state have never refuted.
The Chairman of the NGF who appreciated US contributions to Nigeria Security called for more support in training and modern equipment for fighting and detecting contemporary security challenges.
He further described thick forests that the State is surrounded with as major hiccup that the sophisticated armed criminals consider as safe heaven and has been found difficult for the security outfits to carry out appreciate surveillance.
Earlier, the visiting Ambassador Young told the governor that he alongside members of his entourage were in the state to condole with the government and people of the state on the incessant killings of innocent people in the state which he described as US ill of concern.
He enumerated areas of security, education, economy, among other areas of assistance, that the United States of America have been partnering with Nigeria, adding that they were in Zamfara state to also grab the knowledge of its security challenges.
The event which was attended by all security stakeholders in the state, including traditional rulers, lasted for about three hours.
