In an unprecedented move, President Muhammadu Buhari, has approved the accelerated promotion of two senior officers and a subaltern of the Nigerian Army, top of who is the former Force Commander of the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF), Maj-Gen. Lamidi Adeosun to a three-star General (Lieutenant General).

Also promoted is the current General Officer Commanding (GOC), 7 Division and Commander Sector 1 Operation Lafiya Dole Maiduguri, Brig-Gen. Abdulmalik Bulama Biu, to the rank of Major General (a two-star General).

This was contained in a statement on Tuesday by the Director of Army Public Relations (DAPR), Col. Sagir Musa.

Promotion of a serving officer to the rank of Lieutenant General is rare as apart from those at the level of Service Chiefs, only few other officers have attained such rank.

Some of the few elite officers to have been privileged to receive the rank of a Lieutenant General without being a service Chief including when the then Commandant of Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Maj-Gen Akale was promoted to a three-star General while Lt-Gen Martins Luka Agwai was the Chief of Army Staff.

Others who benefited from such special promotions are: Lieutenant General Chikadiabia Obiakor, who was also promoted to command the UN Peacekeeping Operations during the time of Lt-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika as the Army Chief; and Lt-Gen. Jeremiah Useni who under the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha was then Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as well as Lt.-Gen. Joshua Dogonyaro of the Liberian war fame.
