The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has approved the appointment of Captain Abiodun Folorunsho as the new Director of Naval Information and Spokesperson of the Nigerian Navy.

Captain Folorunsho formally assumed duty on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, taking over from Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, who served in the role for over two years.

Commodore Adams-Aliu has since been redeployed to a higher strategic appointment as the Commander of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, the Navy’s premier operational base.

In a statement signed by the Chief of Policy and Plans, Rear Admiral A.O. Olodude, the Nigerian Navy said Captain Folorunsho brings a wealth of operational, academic and strategic experience to the position.

Born on December 27, 1979, in Benin City, Edo State, Captain Folorunsho began his education in Benin City and Zaria before proceeding to the Nigerian Military School, Zaria, and later the Nigerian Defence Academy, where he was commissioned a Sub-Lieutenant in September 2003.

He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Nigerian Defence Academy and several postgraduate degrees, including qualifications from the National Defence University, Pakistan; the Nigerian Defence Academy; the World Maritime University, Sweden; and the United States Naval War College.

His professional training includes the Junior and Senior Staff Courses, the United Nations Staff Officers Course in Sweden, the Naval Warfare Course in Calabar, and the Higher Defence Management Course at the United States Naval War College in 2023.

Captain Folorunsho has served onboard various Nigerian Navy ships and shore establishments, held command and instructional appointments, and participated in internal security operations.

He has also served as a Military Liaison Officer with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan and contributed to the Navy’s indigenous shipbuilding programme at the Naval Dockyard Limited, Lagos.

A recipient of several awards, including Chief of the Naval Staff commendations and the United Nations Medal, Captain Folorunsho is married to Olawunmi Folorunsho, and they have two children.
