President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for deeper Nigeria–United Kingdom cooperation to address insecurity in the Sahel, stating that Nigeria carries a major responsibility in stabilising the region and ensuring lasting peace.

The president made the remarks during a state banquet held in his honour on Wednesday, marking the first day of his state visit to the UK the first by a Nigerian leader in 37 years.

Tinubu said, “Our West African region faces complex terrorism challenges with roots in the Sahel. Nigeria carries an enormous responsibility to help safeguard regional stability,” stressing that collaboration with the UK remains vital.

He added that further engagements with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer would focus on strengthening security and economic cooperation between both countries.

The visit featured a ceremonial reception hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla, with senior members of the royal family, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, in attendance.

The Nigerian delegation was received with full state honours, including a carriage procession, gun salute, military parade, and inspection of guards at Windsor Castle.

Despite the elaborate reception, Tinubu did not attend the traditional luncheon with the monarch, observing the Ramadan fast.

At the banquet, the president described the visit as historic, noting he was honoured to address a gathering at Windsor Castle, which he said symbolises continuity in governance and democratic evolution.

He highlighted longstanding Nigeria–UK relations, citing shared democratic values, legal traditions, and institutional frameworks influenced by British history, including the Magna Carta of 1215.

Tinubu also emphasised the role of Nigerians in the UK, particularly in healthcare, noting that “Nigerian doctors and nurses play an indispensable role” in the National Health Service.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, the president recalled receiving refuge in the UK during military rule, describing the support he received as significant in shaping the country’s return to democracy.

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties based on mutual respect and shared goals, expressing optimism about future cooperation.

“God bless His Majesty The King. God bless Nigeria. God bless the United Kingdom,” Tinubu said, concluding his address.
