The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alleging bias and abuse of office. The party said the demand is necessary to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy.

ADC leaders staged a protest in Abuja and marched to INEC headquarters. They submitted a formal petition and urged Nigerians to defend democratic institutions.

The protest was led by David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Protesters opened the rally by singing Nigeria’s former national anthem.

In a letter dated April 8, 2026, the party accused INEC of misconduct. “The credibility of the Commission is now at stake,” the ADC stated.

The crisis followed INEC’s derecognition of the David Mark-led leadership after a Court of Appeal ruling. The commission removed the party’s National Working Committee from its portal.

INEC said its action was based on a court order arising from a suit filed by Nafiu Bala Gombe. It noted that Gombe denied resigning and claimed the chairmanship.

The development has raised concerns over Nigeria’s multiparty system. Stakeholders warned that weakening opposition parties could undermine political competition.

A U.S. based lobbying firm, Von Batten-Montague-York, said it is engaging U.S. authorities over the issue. It cited concerns about Nigeria’s electoral credibility since the 2023 elections.

Amid the crisis, PDP and ADC leaders held a closed-door meeting in Abuja. The talks at David Mark’s residence focused on forming a united opposition ahead of 2027.

The Presidency denied any involvement in opposition crises. “There is no design… to have just the APC on the ballot,” presidential aide Sunday Dare said.
