Prof. Rufai Ahmed Alkali has mourned the death of former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, Comrade Patrick Osertin Osambedwan, describing his death as a major loss to the journalism profession and the country.
Alkali, in a condolence statement, described Osambedwan as a consummate media professional who was committed to truth, accountability, public service and the advancement of journalism.
He said he had known and worked closely with the late journalist over the years, describing him as a trusted friend and courageous professional whose commitment to journalistic ethics earned him the respect of colleagues, public officials and members of the wider society.
According to Alkali, Osambedwan belonged to a generation of journalists who regarded journalism as a calling dedicated to truth, public enlightenment, accountability and national development.
He also recalled the late journalist’s contributions as Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, noting that he played significant roles in promoting professionalism, press freedom and the welfare of media practitioners in the FCT and beyond.
The former NUJ chairman’s death, Alkali said, had also drawn attention to what he described as the disturbing increase in the number of journalists dying within the FCT and across the country in recent years.
He urged stakeholders to treat the development as a wake-up call and pay greater attention to the welfare, healthcare and overall well-being of journalists, stressing that media professionals make significant sacrifices in informing, educating and enlightening society.
While extending his condolences to Osambedwan’s family, the NUJ FCT Council, media colleagues, friends and associates, Alkali said the late journalist’s legacy of integrity, courage, professionalism and service would continue to inspire present and future generations.
He prayed to Almighty Allah to forgive Osambedwan’s shortcomings, grant him Aljannatul Firdaus and give his family and colleagues the strength to bear the loss.
