The First Lady of Nigeria, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu has called for a multi dimensional approach in fighting the war against cybercrime in the country, stating the need for the involvement of various stakeholders in winning the issue.
Oluremi stated this on Tuesday, at the 2024 National Cybersecurity Summit, organised by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in collaboration with the EU-funded Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC-Phase II) Programme of the International Institute of Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), in Abuja.
She said, no economy can thrive if most active and talented youth were sold to crime.
This is as she noted that, cybercrime was not just a crime against individuals or businesses but an assault on collective integrity, the nation’s economic stability as well as the future of the youth.
She charged parents on the need to guide their children appropriately by inculcating good values, morals and a sense of patriotism.
Oluremi said, “It is crucial that we emphasise and entrench the culture of hard work rooted in honesty and dignity of labour among our teeming youth.
“Parents play a pivotal role in raising and guiding their children and wards to be God-fearing.Bond of trust and understanding should be created between parents and their children to allow for open communication, whereby their fears and insecurities could be addressed.”
Governor of Kwara state and Chairman Governors Forum, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq stated the need to target our cultural legacy and the impact it have with the perception of crime.
He commended the actions of the anti-graft agencies on the actions carried out to curb crime in the nation while calling for a national consensus of what behaviours constitute irreducible cultural legacy as Nigerians.
His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, cautioned the Nigerian youth against creating a trust deficit to the country’s image as this will affect the economy, ‘big business’ and also, the future of our country.
He said, “It is the youth that will bear the burnt as they are the up coming generations. This negative consequences must be realized.
“Cybercrime is detrimental, not only to the individual youth but also the collective interest of the young persons in out country.”
