The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has linked the resurgence of terror attacks in Nigeria’s North West and North East regions to the influx of foreign fighters from the Sahel region.

This was was disclosed on Thursday by Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, during a biweekly press briefing in Abuja.

Buba stressed that the Nigerian military remains acutely aware of its responsibility to combat insurgency and terrorism, noting that despite occasional tactical setbacks, the ultimate strategic goal of dismantling terrorist forces remains unwavering.

He said During the recent reporting period, Nigerian troops successfully neutralized 156 militants and arrested 464 individuals. In addition, they apprehended 29 suspects involved in oil theft and rescued 181 kidnapped victims. In the South-South region, the military foiled oil theft operations worth approximately N623.4 million.

“Significant arms seizures were also made, including 219 assorted weapons and 2,871 rounds of ammunition. Notable finds included one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), 68 AK-47 rifles, four FN rifles, 27 magazines, and various explosives. In total, the military confiscated 10 vehicles, 42 motorcycles, 29 mobile phones, and a host of other items.”, he noted

He said Troops operating in the Niger Delta destroyed 48 illegal crude oil refining sites and seized over 705,000 liters of stolen crude oil, along with 28 boats and various refining equipment.

While calling on citizens to take responsibility for their own security, and partnering with the military, he reminded the public that the recent Armed Forces Remembrance Day served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by fallen soldiers, whose bravery continues to safeguard the nation.
