In a recent joint operation, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Nigerian Army have seized fake and substandard drugs worth over ₦1 trillion from several drug markets in the South-East and other parts of Nigeria.
The month-long exercise was carried out by troops of Operation UDO KA in partnership with NAFDAC. During a press briefing in Onitsha on Wednesday, Dr. Iluyomade Martins, NAFDAC’s South-East Zonal Director, said more than 100 trailers filled with fake medicines were intercepted during the coordinated operation.
Dr. Martins explained that the aim of the operation was to remove harmful and illegal drugs from major markets in cities like Onitsha, Lagos, and Aba. He praised the Nigerian Army, especially Sector 302 and the 82 Division, for their strong support and active role throughout the process.
“These drugs pose serious health risks and are often linked to criminal activities and insecurity,” he said. “Many of the items seized were dangerous narcotics. Taking them off the streets is a big step toward improving public safety.”
He also noted that the operation is a good example of how collaboration between government agencies can lead to real progress in the fight against illegal drug distribution.
NAFDAC and the Nigerian Army have assured the public that efforts to clean up drug markets will continue. Investigations are ongoing, arrests have been made, and those responsible will face prosecution.
