Nigeria has the potential to take the lead in shaping Africa’s energy future through smarter policies, stronger partnerships, and sustained investment in clean and efficient energy systems, according to the Nigeria Association for Energy Economics (NAEE).

Speaking at a press conference held on Saturday in Abuja, NAEE President, Dr. Hassan Mahmud, said the country’s energy sector holds the key to unlocking Africa’s growth in the face of global shifts in energy production and use.

He explained that as the world transitions from fossil fuels to renewable energy, Nigeria must seize the opportunity to position itself as both a regional energy hub and a model for sustainable development. “Our goal is to ensure that Africa is not left behind in this transformation but instead becomes an active participant in shaping the global energy agenda,” Mahmud said.

The briefing, which was held ahead of the 2025 NAEE Annual International Conference scheduled for October 12–14 at the PTDF Building, Abuja, focused on the theme: “Emerging Geopolitics of the Energy Landscape: Navigating Global Shifts and Implications for Developing Economies.”

According to Mahmud, the conference will bring together government officials, energy experts, investors, and development partners to discuss strategies that balance economic growth with sustainability. He added that the event will also help design policies that attract investment, promote regional cooperation, and support cleaner energy production across Africa.

He emphasized that the NAEE’s mission goes beyond research and discussion — it is about building bridges between policy and practice. “We want this conference to produce clear, actionable recommendations that will guide governments, investors, and regulators in the years ahead,” he said.

In attendance at the press conference were Prof. Yinka Omorogbe, Immediate Past President; Prof. Wumi Illedare, Council Adviser; Dr. (Mrs.) Priscilia Ekpe, Local Organizing Committee Chairperson; Dr. (Mrs.) Margarete Hilili, Treasurer; and Mr. Feso Bright, Publicity Secretary.

Others included Dr. (Mrs.) Amina Danmadami, Auditor and SPE Chairperson; and Mr. Simeon Abiri, Assistant Secretary, who joined Dr. Mahmud in calling for stronger partnerships between the public and private sectors to drive Nigeria’s energy future.
