Twenty-five members of the Osun State House of Assembly have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Accord Party, citing the need to ensure continuity in governance and accelerate development across Osun State.
The defection, announced Friday after plenary, follows the earlier move by Governor Ademola Adeleke, who left the PDP for Accord in December 2025 ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
A statement by the Speaker’s Chief Press Secretary, Olamide Tiamiyu, said the lawmakers formally declared their new political affiliation during the parliamentary session before proceeding to the Banquet Hall to meet the governor and leaders of the Accord Party.
According to the statement, the legislators said their decision was driven by a commitment to “excellent representation, openness and responsive leadership,” while reaffirming support for Governor Adeleke.
“They further noted that their decision to join the governor’s party was aimed at ensuring continuity in governance and accelerating development for the people of Osun State,” the statement read.
Tiamiyu disclosed that the lawmakers had resigned from the PDP weeks earlier, adding that the switch followed “intense contemplation and extensive consultations with supporters, political associates and key stakeholders.”
The defectors maintained that Accord offers “a more stable, inclusive and people-centered platform” to advance legislative work and sustain development initiatives across the state.
With the defection of the 25 members, including Speaker Adewale Egbedun, the only opposition lawmaker left in the 26-member Assembly is Mr. Femi Popoola of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
