The State of Palestine has officially welcomed its new Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Muhannad Alhammouri, marking a renewed chapter in Palestine-Nigeria diplomatic relations.

Ambassador Alhammouri presented a copy of his letter of credence on May 23, 2025, to Ambassador Wahab A. Akande, Chief of Protocol at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, formally commencing his diplomatic mission in Abuja.

He succeeds Ambassador Abdullah Abu M. Shawesh, who served from 2022 to 2024 and significantly advanced bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and Palestine during his tenure.

With over 20 years of experience in international diplomacy, Ambassador Alhammouri brings a robust track record in bilateral relations, embassy leadership, and diplomatic negotiations.

His appointment is expected to further strengthen collaboration between Nigeria and Palestine across trade, education, culture, and public diplomacy.

Ambassador Muhannad Alhammouri: A Distinguished Diplomatic Career

Prior to his current posting, Ambassador Alhammouri served as First Counsellor at the Palestinian Embassy in Turkmenistan (2016–2024), where he led key diplomatic initiatives and facilitated strategic partnerships.

He also held leadership roles within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including:

  • Director of Asia and Australia Department (2014–2016)
  • Counsellor and Chargé d’Affaires in Kazakhstan (2007–2014)
  • Chief of Protocol (1999–2007)
  • Deputy Chief of Protocol (1994–1998)

His educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Kazakh Economic University and a Higher National Diploma in Business and Finance from Bradford University, UK.

Strengthening Palestine-Nigeria Relations

Ambassador Alhammouri’s arrival signals a renewed focus on deepening ties between Nigeria and Palestine, particularly in areas such as:

  • Bilateral trade and investment
  • Educational and cultural exchange
  • Diplomatic and strategic cooperation

Speaking after his presentation of credentials, Ambassador Alhammouri expressed his commitment to fostering “mutual respect, cooperation, and shared development goals between the peoples of Palestine and Nigeria.”

As both countries continue to navigate a complex international landscape, the new Palestinian envoy is expected to play a vital role in expanding diplomatic engagement and building lasting partnerships.
