Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, former Governor of Sokoto State and ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives, has formally left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC). He cited internal crises and leadership decline within the PDP as key reasons for the switch.
Tambuwal, who currently represents Sokoto Central in the 10th National Assembly, has switched parties several times in his career, always maintaining electoral success.
Announcing his resignation from the PDP on Thursday, Tambuwal said the move followed “deep reflection and consultations” with political advisers.
“Today, after deep reflection and consultations, I have formally resigned my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party, and I have communicated my resignation to my ward chairman in writing,” he stated.
Acknowledging his long political journey, Tambuwal said the PDP shaped his career from his days as Speaker, through two terms as Governor, to his current role as Senator. “The PDP has been a significant part of my political journey, and I remain grateful,” he said.
He explained that ongoing factionalism and party decline made it impossible to continue within the PDP. “For me, it became clear that I could no longer operate effectively within the PDP due to its internal decline,” he added.
Tambuwal said he chose the ADC because of its potential to strengthen democracy and provide a credible platform for national development. “I am convinced that this decision is guided by my belief that Nigeria needs a stronger political platform built on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and a clear commitment to national development,” he said.
The Senator reaffirmed his commitment to democratic governance, national unity, and justice, emphasizing that the switch aligns with his long-term vision for Nigeria’s political progress.
Observers note that Tambuwal’s defection follows his close alignment with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, whom he served as campaign Director General during the 2023 presidential election.
Tambuwal now joins other high-profile politicians, including Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, who recently officially joined the ADC, signaling a strengthening of the party ahead of upcoming elections.
