Community leaders in Southeast have commended the Nigerian military over the conduct and outcomes of Operation Udoka, citing improved security and relative peace in affected communities.
They recalled the assurance by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, that the Armed Forces remain committed to restoring and sustaining peace and security across the country.
Under Operation Udoka, the military has recorded gains against criminal and secessionist activities linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), and other criminal elements in the Southeast and parts of Cross River State, including the destruction of 45 camps and 51 illegal bunkering sites, and the rescue of 49 hostages.
Speaking while hosting Defence Correspondents during a tour of Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, the council chairman, Barrister Sunday Nwankwo, said the military’s presence has had a positive impact on the area.
“The presence of the military has improved security in our communities and contributed to peaceful celebrations during the Christmas and New Year period,” he said.
He added that the local government would continue to cooperate with the military and other security agencies through intelligence sharing and community engagement.
The traditional ruler of Amagikwo, His Royal Majesty Eze Sir Dominic, also commended the troops for restoring stability.
“We will continue to support security agencies by mobilising our communities to provide useful information,” the monarch said.
Similarly, the women leader of Ikwo community, Mrs. Ngozi Margaret Igwe, said the presence of soldiers has helped reduce cultism and other criminal activities among youths.
The Commander of the 24 Support Engineer Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Ikenna Chielo, said the operation also includes non-kinetic engagements with host communities.
“We engage communities through town hall meetings, medical outreach programmes, and civil-military cooperation activities,” he said.
