The Nigerian Army has strengthened its operational capacity in the North-West with the graduation of a new batch of drone pilots under the 8 Division and Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA.

The graduation ceremony, held at the Division Training School, Giginya Military Cantonment in Sokoto, marked a significant milestone in the Army’s push to integrate advanced technology into its operations through the deployment of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).

Addressing the graduates, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division and Commander, Sector 2 Joint Task Force (North West), Bemgba Paul Koughna, said the initiative reflects the military’s commitment to enhancing force protection and operational effectiveness in tackling evolving security challenges.

Koughna highlighted the strategic importance of drones in modern warfare, noting that UAVs provide real-time intelligence, reduce risks to personnel, and improve mission efficiency. He stressed that the effective integration of such technology into combat systems is now critical to achieving success on the battlefield.

“Drone integration is no longer optional but a necessity,” he said, urging the newly trained pilots to deploy their skills effectively across their respective units.

Earlier, the Course Coordinator, Samuel Yakubu, described the Drone Pilots Training Cadre as a strategic initiative designed to enhance the Division’s operational capabilities. He disclosed that 27 personnel drawn from various formations within the Division’s area of responsibility participated in the intensive programme.

According to him, the training equipped participants with critical skills, including drone navigation using offline maps, operation of ground control systems, aircraft assembly and handling, as well as surveillance techniques such as imaging, video capture, and coordinate tracking.

The training programme culminated in a practical demonstration, where the graduates showcased their proficiency in pre-flight procedures, aerial surveillance, tactical manoeuvres, and precision landings, earning commendation from senior officers in attendance.

In recognition of their performance, the GOC decorated the graduates with pilot wings and presented awards, including cash prizes, to outstanding participants.

The development underscores the Nigerian Army’s ongoing efforts to leverage technology to enhance operational readiness and improve outcomes in its fight against insecurity in the North-West and beyond.
