The Defence Headquarters has dismissed reports claiming that the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, accused residents of Borno and Yobe states of supporting terrorism.

The military described the report as misleading and a misrepresentation of the CDS’s recent comments on counterterrorism operations.

In a statement, the Defence Headquarters said Oluyede did not generalise or indict citizens of Borno State and Yobe State.

It explained that the CDS emphasised the need for stronger community collaboration in addressing security challenges.

According to the statement, he noted that the fight against terrorism requires collective effort beyond the military.

The military added that the CDS referenced specific cases where terrorists exploited local structures, including instances of wounded fighters found in communities.

It stressed that the remarks were meant to encourage vigilance and cooperation, not to accuse entire populations.

The Defence Headquarters also urged media organisations to verify facts and avoid sensational reporting that could undermine public trust.
