Nigeria and United States of America have formally inaugurated Defence Institutional Technical Working Groups (DITWGs) in Abuja, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral security cooperation under the 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap.

The initiative is aimed at enhancing joint efforts to combat terrorism, address insecurity, and promote stability within Nigeria and across the wider region.

Speaking at the inauguration, head of the U.S. delegation, Cate Dave, said the working groups would support strategic planning and institutional capacity building, key to denying terrorist groups safe havens.

He stressed that strong institutions remain central to effective counterterrorism operations, noting that the partnership is designed to deliver practical and sustainable security outcomes.

On his part, leader of the Nigerian delegation, Francis Edosa, underscored the importance of the collaboration in addressing evolving threats confronting the country and the region.

He explained that priority areas include strengthening the warfighting capabilities of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and improving operational responsiveness to restore lasting peace and stability.

Both delegations emphasised the need for accountability, measurable results, and sustained engagement, noting that the success of the initiative would depend on consistent implementation and shared commitment.

The inauguration of the working groups signals a renewed push by both countries to deepen defence ties and coordinate efforts in tackling complex security challenges.
