In response to the alarming increase in kidnapping incidents within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), a group known as Friends of the FCT has penned a letter to Mr. Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the FCT Administration, suggesting strategies to combat the growing insecurity.

The letter made available to Global Sentinel on Saturday and addressed to the Minister, expresses deep concern over the recent wave of kidnappings in the Nation’s Capital, which has instilled fear and anxiety among residents and potential investors alike.

Recognising the government’s efforts thus far, the group proposed several additional measures to enhance security within the territory.

The letter, signed by Mr. Nwazuruahu Henry Shield, Chairman of the Board of Trustees; Mr. Azuka Obukwelu, Head of Administration; and Otunba Anu Ibiwoye, Executive Coordinator, reaffirmed the group’s commitment to contributing to the safety and progress of the FCT.

Among the suggestions put forward by the group is the activation of all CCTV cameras installed during the former President Goodluck Jonathan administration, along with the procurement and installation of additional units at critical junctions and neighborhoods. The letter emphasised the importance of surveillance in deterring and apprehending criminals.

Furthermore, the group advocated for the establishment of a Control Room manned by a monitoring crew comprising personnel from various security agencies. This Control Room would oversee the surveillance efforts and coordinate responses to security threats in real-time.

To bolster patrol capabilities, the group called for the deployment of Security Power bikes equipped with state-of-the-art security and communication gadgets to key junctions and neighborhoods. Additionally, they recommended the establishment of community security systems to empower residents to report suspicious activities and enhance collaboration with security agencies.

The letter also proposed the engagement and deployment of Civilian Intelligence Officers, referred to as Layers, to gather intelligence and report directly to the Control Room. It suggested the provision of dedicated security hotlines for easy access by residents, as well as robust media engagement to educate and enlighten the public on security issues.

Other recommendations include illuminating dark spots with solar-powered streetlights and promoting a culture of vigilance among residents through various community-based initiatives.

The group expresses confidence that with these additional measures, the current insecurity plaguing the FCT will be effectively addressed, paving the way for a safer and more secure capital city.
