Mr. Tobenna Erojikwe, a partner with The Law Crest LLP, a full service commercial law firm based in Lagos State has secured the release of seven male inmates at the Nigeria Correctional Service Centre (NCC) in Keffi, Nasarawa state, as part of activities to mark his birthday this Saturday March 16, 2024.
Erojikwe, who serves as Chairman, board of Institute of Continued Legal Education of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) made this gesture when he accompanied members of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria, Abuja Branch, who were visiting female inmates at the correctional centre as part of activities to mark International Women’s Day (IWD).
He commended FIDA for their dedicated work, particularly in providing pro bono services to indigent women. He expressed his admiration by covering the fine option for seven male inmates, extending support to the philanthropic efforts of the female lawyers association.
Recall that FIDA, in collaboration with My Take Initiative, visited the inmates on Wednesday, offering essential items such as sanitary towels, soaps, toiletries, and numerous pairs of slippers, recognizing the specific needs of women in custody. Furthermore, bags of rice were distributed to address immediate concerns and provide support.
FIDA also organized a comprehensive legal clinic, conducting one-on-one interviews with female inmates to identify those requiring legal representation, assistance with bail conditions, or mediation for unresolved cases.
“I joined members of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria Abuja Branch on a visit to the Nigeria Correctional Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa state because I have a keen interest in the work of FIDA and the issues pertaining to Correctional Services.
“I’m here to understand how I can contribute and to lend a helping hand to those incarcerated. Among them were seven male inmates who had the option of paying a fine as part of their sentence. After reviewing their situations, I felt compelled to cover their fines, enabling them to reintegrate into society,” expressed Erojikwe.
Erojikwe has picked his nomination form for the Presidential position in the upcoming Nigerian Bar Association elections. He is passionately seeking to reform the profession, uphold the rule of law, and foster a more dignified Nigerian Bar Association.
“There are three cardinal aspects I intend to prioritize within the NBA. Firstly, the dignity of the NBA is paramount. Our mantra, the “promotion of the rule of law,” must be safeguarded and preserved meticulously as it reflects the integrity of our profession and defines us as individual lawyers.
“Additionally, we’ll place a strong emphasis on empowering lawyers. As someone who invests in people, my work at the Institute of Continued Education reflects the journey of my life as a lawyer, dedicated to advancing the profession and improving the prospects of every lawyer in Nigeria.”
“Lastly, I’m deeply committed to reforming our profession. The Legal Education Bill currently before the National Assembly is a priority that we must push forward and enact to initiate much-needed changes,” he stressed.
