Stakeholders have called for urgent investment in water supply and sanitation systems to drive Agenda 2063. The call highlights water security as a policy priority for Africa’s development.
The position was presented in Abuja at the unveiling of Africa Day 2026. The event also featured the inauguration of the Local Organising Committee.
The programme is being coordinated by the Pan African AU Agenda 2063 Diplomatic Mission. It focuses on water, hygiene and sanitation as key development drivers.
Global President of the Mission, Amb. Dr. Stephen Gbatigbi Ben-Joel, said access to clean water is now a basic human necessity. He linked it to health outcomes, dignity and economic growth.
“Water is life, water is dignity, and water is development,” he said. He added that millions still lack safe drinking water and sanitation services.
He said the 2026 theme reflects the urgency of addressing water scarcity. The theme centres on sustainable water systems and safe sanitation.
Africa Day 2026 will hold from May 23 to May 25 in Abuja. About 2,000 participants, including policymakers and youth leaders, are expected.
Activities will include policy dialogues, cultural events and advocacy programmes. A webinar series on water sustainability and climate resilience is also planned.
Amb. Phil Roberts was inaugurated to chair the organising committee. He pledged to deliver a successful event and keep the WASH agenda central.
Director General, Amb. Dr. Elizabeth Emeka-Onwuchekwa, said water challenges will define Africa’s future. “This is not just policy, it is a human imperative,” she said, urging stronger partnerships and investment.
