The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has stepped up efforts to address the concerns of retired military personnel, bringing together leaders of veterans’ associations for a strategic retreat focused on welfare, collaboration and their continued contribution to national security.
The retreat, held at the Army Headquarters Command Mess 1 in Asokoro, Abuja, was convened under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, in collaboration with the Retired Army, Navy and Air Force Officers’ Association of Nigeria (RANAO).
Speaking on behalf of the CDS, the Chief of Defence Operations, Major General Jamal Abdussalam, said continuous engagement with veterans remains critical to resolving issues affecting retired personnel and strengthening the bond between serving and retired members of the Armed Forces.
He assured participants that the welfare of veterans remains a priority for the Defence Headquarters, revealing that efforts are ongoing to implement the recently approved salary increase and the corresponding pension adjustments in line with statutory procedures.
Abdussalam said the military leadership is also working to improve healthcare services, ensure prompt pension payments and strengthen welfare packages for retired personnel in recognition of their sacrifices to the nation.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to the welfare of members of the Armed Forces and urged veterans to remain steadfast, patient and committed to the ideals of discipline, loyalty and patriotism.
Beyond welfare, the retreat explored ways of strengthening cooperation among veterans’ associations and encouraging retired military personnel to continue supporting national development through mentorship, advocacy and initiatives that promote peace, unity and security.
Participants described the engagement as a significant step towards building stronger ties between the Defence Headquarters and the veteran community, expressing optimism that regular consultations would help address longstanding concerns while preserving the invaluable experience of retired military personnel for national development.
