Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on Tuesday launched the Service Charter,in a bid to improve it’s service delivery system.

The event which took place in Abuja, was set to reform the standards of operation through sustained service improvement.

Minister of Power, Engineer Abubakar Aliyu commended the commission for taking the bold step, adding, the charter establishes the high standards of service that the electricity consumers can expect from the power sector.

Aliyu, Represented by the Director Reform Coordination and Service Improvement of the ministry, Titilayo Agbeyo noted that,this creates a set of promises where citizens can expect and demand quality service as a right of which they have recourse when it fails.

He said,”The service charter, is therefore crucial to the management and staff of this employment to continually improve on service delivery.

“It provides information on how the commission renders services including how to lodge complaints, give compliment and make suggestions

“The essence of service charter cannot be overemphasize, in view of the achievement of the mandate, goal and objective. This charter provides information to the general public on the function and services rendered by the commission to the agencies and private companies whose activities it monitors.

The Minister adviced the commission to be customer focused, citizen centered and to continue the good work its doing, as it collaborates to upgrade in the power sector and service to humanity.

He further stated, “An effective implementation of this charter will definitely improve services, elevates on the rights and regulations of electricity consumers, address complaints through the redress mechanisms in place, increase staff competency and skills, productivity and human resources administration bas well as result based performances,” he said.

On his part, the NERC Chairman Sanusi Garba, explained that the NERC Service Charter is a holistic and tactical compendium that defines the service experience stakeholders will have in engaging with the Commission.

Garba stated, “The NERC service Charter has summarized the mutual expectations of the Commission and Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) stakeholders by defining service levels, rights, obligations and redress mechanism.

“It can also serve as a quick reference for vital information on NERC forum OFFICE, existing limitations of NERC and also address subtle issues regarding persons with special needs as well as monitoring and review of the Charter.” He stated.

Also, the SERVICOM National Coordinator, Nnenna Akajemeli while delivering the keynote address said, the objective of the charter was to create, promote and preserve efficient industry and market structures and to ensure the optimal utilisation of resources for the provision of electricity service.

“Servicom is set to close the performs gap when there is any, as this system ensure the adequate delivery of service to customers and clients.When we run government business is to ensure that the mandate is realised and it is done in such a way that at the end the essence of governance is realised, lives are touched, by the outcome of our office as government exist to serve the people.”
