The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has recorded a significant boost to its operational capability with the reactivation of the Super Puma helicopter, NAF 565.

The aircraft was commissioned on 4 February 2026 at 205 Rotary Wing, Ikeja, Lagos, marking a renewed push to strengthen fleet availability and mission readiness.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, described the reactivation as a symbol of renewed focus, resilience, and institutional commitment to national defence.

He said the return of the Super Puma underscored the NAF’s determination to restore and sustain critical air assets needed to meet evolving security challenges across the country.

Air Marshal Aneke expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for consistent support to airpower development under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to him, government backing has translated into concrete gains through asset restoration, strategic acquisitions, and improved operational preparedness of the Service.

The CAS highlighted the Super Puma as one of the most versatile platforms in the NAF inventory, noting its importance in troop transport, casualty evacuation, search and rescue, logistics support, and maritime security operations.

He added that the helicopter had played key roles in Operation Hadin Kai and other joint missions, and that its reactivation would further strengthen counterinsurgency, anti-banditry, and maritime security efforts nationwide.

Commending those behind the reactivation, the CAS praised the consultant, retired Air Commodore T.A. Badru, alongside the Air Officer Commanding Mobility Command and technicians of 205 Rotary Wing for their professionalism and dedication.

He urged aircrew and maintenance personnel to uphold strict safety and maintenance standards to sustain the aircraft’s serviceability and operational effectiveness.

During an interaction with officers, airmen, and airwomen at Sam Ethnan Air Force Base, Air Marshal Aneke reaffirmed his commitment to fleet modernisation, improved welfare, and better accommodation, stressing that personnel welfare remains central to enhanced operational performance.
