Senator Kawu Sumaila has called for improved access to passport services as the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) outlined reforms aimed at reducing delays and making passport processing easier for Nigerians at home and abroad.

Sumaila, who represents Kano South, raised concerns over complaints from constituents and Nigerians in the diaspora about difficulties obtaining passports.

He said the reforms must be properly communicated to citizens, particularly those affected by changes in the passport processing system.

“Communication is very important in each and every policy at every level,” Sumaila said.

Representing the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nanna Nandap, DCG Fu Nwanneka, DCG, Visa and Residency, said the NIS had automated several processes to address passport backlogs and other challenges.

Nwanneka explained that the Service had centralised passport production, while applicants could still complete their applications and biometrics through designated channels.

She added that the NIS was using English, Pidgin and Hausa for public sensitisation on the new passport procedures.

ACG To Olaiya, Assistant Comptroller General, said Nigerians in Saudi Arabia could access online and contactless passport services without visiting an Immigration office.

“Online passports, you don’t need to go to any of our branches. You start it from the comfort of your home,” Olaiya said.

She disclosed that the NIS began its contactless passport service in September 2024, adding that Nigerians in Saudi Arabia could also seek assistance from Immigration officials and the NIS attaché in Jeddah.
