Abia State Government has commenced strict enforcement of its ban on motorcycle operations in Aba, Umuahia and Ohafia as part of efforts to strengthen security across the state.

The government warned that offenders will face a ₦50,000 fine, while their motorcycles will be impounded for violating the restriction.

Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, announced the enforcement in Umuahia, saying the policy is aimed at improving public safety and addressing security concerns.

He said any motorcycle operator found on restricted routes would have their bike seized immediately by enforcement teams.

Kanu explained that the ban applies to commercial, private and delivery motorcycle operators within the affected cities.

He added that all operators must comply with mandatory registration under the state’s transport regulation framework.

According to him, enforcement will be carried out by the Abia State Harmonised Task Force in collaboration with security agencies.

He noted that designated centres have been created in Aba, Umuahia and Ohafia for impounded motorcycles.

The Commissioner said registered riders would be issued identification materials, including colour-coded jackets for easy monitoring.

He also clarified that courier and delivery motorcycles must not carry passengers under any circumstances.

Kanu acknowledged that the policy may cause temporary hardship but maintained that it is necessary for public safety, while alternative transport arrangements are being considered.

Security Adviser to the Governor, retired Navy Commander MacDonald Uba, said the measure is preventive and aimed at avoiding insecurity challenges seen in other states.

He urged residents to support the policy, stressing that the government’s priority remains the safety and protection of lives and property.
