The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has established its first permanent presence in Abia State following the handover of office and residential facilities, as well as 120 hectares of land, by the Abia State Government to strengthen security operations in the South-East.
The handover ceremony, held on Friday in Abia State, was attended by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (Rtd.), and other senior government and military officials.
Speaking at the event, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, described the development as a major milestone in the Nigerian Air Force’s efforts to expand its operational footprint and improve its response to security challenges in the region.
According to him, the facilities include a modern office complex, residential accommodation for personnel and a Certificate of Occupancy for 120 hectares of land at Nsulu, which he said would enhance operational effectiveness and provide opportunities for future military training.
Aneke disclosed that the Air Force would explore the establishment of a military training institution on the allocated land, subject to the necessary approvals, noting that the project could boost both national defence capabilities and socio-economic development in the state.
Governor Alex Otti said the decision to provide the facilities was driven by his administration’s commitment to strengthening security, stressing that peace and stability remain essential for economic growth and investment.
He expressed confidence that the permanent presence of the Nigerian Air Force would improve public safety, deepen civil-military cooperation and support the state’s development aspirations.
The Air Chief commended the Abia State Government for what he described as a demonstration of strategic partnership, assuring residents that the Nigerian Air Force would effectively utilise the facilities to enhance security, protect lives and property, and contribute to national development.
