Amnesty International Nigeria has called on FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to suspend planned demolition activities on Plot 5334 in Maitama, Abuja, pending a review of the land’s allocation and its alleged role as a critical drainage corridor.

The organisation warned that allowing private real estate development on the plot could obstruct stormwater drainage, increase flooding and endanger neighbouring properties and public infrastructure.

In a statement, it said the Director of Development Control issued a demolition notice dated October 9, 2026, reportedly targeting protective boundary structures along the corridor.

Amnesty International noted that the dispute was subject to ongoing litigation and an alternative dispute resolution process before the FCT ADR Committee. It also said the FCDA had reportedly confirmed that the land was reserved for an infrastructure corridor.

The organisation urged the authorities to commission an independent technical assessment, disclose relevant allocation and planning documents, and halt demolition until the legal, environmental and public safety concerns are resolved.
