Governor Umo Bassey Eno has commended the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) for strengthening its operational footprint in Akwa Ibom State, describing the development as a major step toward enhancing security, attracting investment, and sustaining economic growth in the region.
The governor made the remarks during the operational visit of the Chief of the Air Staff, Sunday Kelvin Aneke, to Akwa Ibom State on April 30, 2026.
Speaking during a high-level engagement, Eno said the establishment and operationalisation of the 309 Composite Group in Eket would significantly strengthen security architecture in the state and across the Niger Delta. He noted that the presence of the Air Force unit would deter criminal activities, protect critical infrastructure, and reinforce stability.
“The operationalisation of this Unit is a major boost to peace, stability, and economic activities within Akwa Ibom State and the wider Niger Delta region,” the governor said, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to sustained collaboration with the military.
The visit featured strategic engagements with key stakeholders and an inspection of facilities at the 309 Composite Group, highlighting the NAF’s renewed efforts to combat emerging threats and secure vital economic assets in the region.
In his remarks, Air Marshal Aneke commended the state government for its support in facilitating the establishment of the unit, describing it as a critical forward operating base for intelligence, surveillance, and rapid response missions.
“The 309 Composite Group is a strategic platform to enhance security and safeguard key national assets. We are committed to deploying effective airpower in support of national security objectives,” he stated.
During the visit to Eket, the Air Chief also met with the Paramount Ruler, Charles D. Abia, and other community stakeholders, where he emphasised the importance of civil-military cooperation in achieving lasting security outcomes.
He noted that trust, intelligence-sharing, and community engagement remain critical in addressing security challenges and sustaining peace.
Earlier, the Air Officer Commanding Mobility Command, MN Onyebashi, during an inspection of facilities at the unit, expressed confidence in the operational readiness of personnel. He assured that the Command remains aligned with the directives of the Chief of the Air Staff to maintain high standards of professionalism and operational efficiency.
The development signals a strengthened security framework in Akwa Ibom and the broader Niger Delta, as authorities intensify efforts to protect critical assets and promote a stable environment for economic activities.
