The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has been honoured with the Award of Excellence by the Nigerian Institute of Physics in recognition of his leadership, professional achievements, and contributions to national security and technological advancement.
The award was presented during the Institute’s 47th Annual Conference held at Lead City University under the theme, “Smart Physics: A New Perspective for Technological Advancement.”
The conference attracted physicists, researchers, academics, government officials, and industry stakeholders focused on promoting scientific innovation and national development.
Speaking during the event, the President of the Institute, Joseph Coker, described the appointment of Air Marshal Aneke as the 23rd Chief of the Air Staff as a reflection of competence, professionalism, and intellectual capacity.
According to him, the CAS, who studied Physics at the Nigerian Defence Academy, has consistently applied analytical and problem-solving principles associated with the discipline in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
Professor Coker also commended the leadership style of the Air Chief, particularly his efforts in strengthening ongoing military operations and enhancing the operational capabilities of the Nigerian Air Force.
He further highlighted the growing importance of physics and technological innovation in driving national growth, security, and industrial development.
Represented at the ceremony by the Chief of Civil-Military Relations, Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, the CAS expressed appreciation to the Institute for the recognition.
He stated that the award reflects the enduring relevance of physics in leadership, decision-making, and operational planning, noting that the discipline promotes precision, logic, and critical thinking.
According to him, the Nigerian Air Force continues to leverage scientific principles such as aerodynamics, thermodynamics, and electromagnetism to improve operational effectiveness and strengthen the defence of Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
The conference also featured the conferment of fellowships on distinguished members of the Institute and a keynote address delivered by Uzodinma Chukwuma of Olabisi Onabanjo University.
Participants at the event stressed the need for stronger collaboration between academia, government institutions, and the private sector to accelerate scientific innovation and technological advancement in Nigeria.
