Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Deputy National Chairman, Olabode George, has urged President Bola Tinubu to prioritise citizens’ welfare over political interests, warning that economic hardship, insecurity and political tensions threaten national stability.

George called on the Federal Government to address hunger, unemployment, poor healthcare, education challenges and insecurity, stressing that governance must focus on improving the lives of Nigerians.

He blamed ethnic and religious divisions on weak institutions, poverty, inequality and politicians who exploit communal differences for personal gain. He also advocated a stronger national identity that places citizenship above ethnic and religious affiliations.

The PDP chieftain called for constitutional recognition of political zoning, arguing that the arrangement was intended to promote inclusion and prevent any region from feeling excluded from power.

Ahead of the 2027 presidential election, George appealed to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to reconsider his ambition and allow the South to retain the presidency until 2031. He also urged the Arewa Consultative Forum to promote restraint and encouraged young northern politicians to prepare for future elections.

He further advised Tinubu to take decisive action against those he believes are obstructing his administration, warning that widespread hunger among children and mounting pressure on households require urgent attention.

Recalling the 1962 political crisis in the former Western Region and events preceding the Nigerian Civil War, George urged political leaders to learn from history and prevent current tensions from escalating.

He lamented Nigeria’s declining international standing despite its population, natural resources and skilled workforce, citing insecurity, governance challenges and prolonged renovation work at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

George said Nigeria could regain its continental influence by addressing its challenges, recalling the country’s historic support for liberation movements in Southern Africa, Angola and Zimbabwe. He pledged to continue speaking out against wrongdoing and holding those in power accountable.
